I ride what I build — more than 12,000 miles a year. The incredible network of back roads in the Texas Hill Country provides a perfect proving ground to test wheels.

On this page I've put together the specs of my "real world" wheels, listed from lightest to heaviest.

Attention weight weenies:
Don't confuse my specs with common bare wheel weights; my specs are for complete wheels with tires, tubes, rim strips, skewers and cassette.

(EDGE) ENVE Carbon
DT 190 hubset, (EDGE label) ENVE 45 clincher front (20 spokes) and 65 clincher rear (24 spokes, DT Revolution radial front, Revolution/Competition 2 cross rear, Michelin Pro 4, Race Lite tubes, Dura Ace 12–25 cassette

Weight for complete wheels: 958 grams front, 1332 grams rear, 2290 grams for the set.

Formerly my choice for TT's. Now an option for fast road rides. The rims are amazingly smooth over Hill Country cattle guards.

H2-3 Alpha 340 32
White Industries H2 front, H3 rear, Dura Ace skewers. DT Revolution front and rear non-drice and DT Competition drive side. Stan's NOTUBES Alpha 340 (32 hole) with an inside width of 17mm or more than 3mm wider than rims with similar outside width. Challenge Elite Lite 23c Open Tubulars measure 25mm on the Alpha 340's. Vittoria Latex tubes, Stan's 21mm rim tape.

Weight for complete wheels: 979 grams front, 1352 grams rear, 2331 grams for the set. Bare weight for this extra-light 32 spoke set is only 1387.

Light, fast and as smooth as tubulars.

The Pro Optimum's take the edge off the harshness of the Kinlin rims making these a nice set for all road conditions.

My set for dirt roads and rough conditions. White Industries H2-3 hubset, Velocity A23 rims, DT Competition spokes front and Revolution/Competition rear, Continental 4 Season 28c (measure 28mm on the A23 rims), Conti Race tubes, Velox rim tape, Ultegra 12–27 10 speed cassette, Mavic skewers.

Vintage Dura Ace 7400 Rebuilds

Set 1: Dura Ace 7400 hubset, 32 front and rear, DT RR1 rims, DT Competition spokes with brass nipples, Challenge Parigi Roubaix, Vittoria latex tubes, Conti rim strips, Dura Ace 12-21 8 speed cassette.

Set 2: Dura Ace 7400 hubset, 24 front and 32 rear, Velocity A23 rims, DT Competition spokes with brass nipples, Michelin Pro Optimum tires, Conti Race tubes and rim strips, Dura Ace 12-23 8 speed cassette.

Both sets were originally built in the early '90's with asymetrical lacing. I rebuilt with my preferred symetrical lacing pattern, using spoke washers to prevent any further marring of the spoke holes.
